More About AI Literacy
During the last 25 years, the internet has significantly impacted our everyday lives and during the next 10 years, artificial intelligence (AI) will even more profoundly change our lives. The AI Literacy program was created to help increase awareness and the critical thinking skills of middle school students, high school students, and other young adults about the promise of and how artificial intelligence will impact their daily lives so that they can make discerning researching, purchasing and other decisions when online and offline.
AI Literacy is comprised of two parts:
- A curated collection of educational and learning videos, articles, and blogs about AI that are targeted to young adults. The online world is a reflection of the real world and while we are optimistic about the many improvements that AI will bring mankind, those using the internet must be knowledgeable and informed consumers of information and understand how AI, just like any new technology, will impact our online experiences. We will dispel myths about AI creating armies of evil robots, as popularized by sci fi television thrillers such as Battlestar Galactica or AI that runs amuck and kills humans as in the 1968 sci fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey or the 1984 movie the Terminator. However, we will also thoughtfully explore some very real and difficult issues. As an example, cyberbullies and hate websites have been part of the internet since almost its beginning, but “seeing may no longer always be believing” because hate websites and cyberbullies will be able to use AI technologies such as deepfake to spread hatred and lies in new and compelling ways. We believe that AI offers mankind many amazing new opportunities for good and by understanding the new rules of the road, we’ll be better able to navigate through life and enjoy the rich bounty that awaits us!
- A curated collection of videos, articles, white papers and blogs detailing good practice examples that show how AI will make our world a better place and allow us to live richer, fuller and more satisfying lives. Through a curated collection of videos, articles, white papers and blogs, young adults will learn about some of the transformational ways AI is today and will in the future impact us. Areas covered include education, health, agriculture, smart citizens, deforestation, trustworthy systems, smart government, urban solutions, poverty eradication, emergency responses, among others. Discover, learn and then add to the conversation!
The AI Literacy site is designed to be a thoughtful and balanced conversation about AI, but one that also reflects our optimism and celebrates the many good ways that AI is being successfully used for the benefit of mankind. No advertising is accepted on this site. We don’t make money on this site. AI Literacy is maintained by Net Literacy as a public service and in appreciation of the many individuals and organizations that are working to increase digital literacy and helping the benefits of AI become realized throughout our planet. About Net Literacy
Digital exclusion is expensive! It diminishes the quality of people’s lives, reduces their competitiveness and life options, and closes them off from a world of information, entertainment, and communications. Net Literacy, an all-volunteer student managed NGO whose board of directors is 50% comprised of students, respectfully believes that many of the best practices of how to effective approach increasing digital inclusion, AI literacy and digital literacy have already been established by many organizations in countries all over the world. Our organization’s successes are a result of the support we received from nonprofits, government, businesses, trade associations, and volunteers in the United States and around the world. Net Literacy and our thousands of partners believe that we can all be inspired by each other, celebrate our successes together, and learn from disappointments.
Net Literacy was founded by students in 2003 and has developed an integrated series of digital literacy programs: Senior Connects, Safe Connects, Computer Connects, Community Connects, Financial Connects, the Digital Literacy “best practices” website and AI Literacy. Closing the digital divide and increasing digital and AI literacy is an international and collaborate effort. At Net Literacy, we believe that while one person can make a difference, together, we can change the world!
