Viruses

What is a Computer Virus?

A small, malicious (mean) program that infects and uses your computer to spread itself to other computers. Viruses are
deceptive (sneaky) and people usually don’t even know when they have one.

How do I get one?

Viruses spread silently; most commonly through E-mail and Instant Messaging. Sometimes they are even attached to files downloaded from the internet (usually in free games).

What can it do to me?

A virus can do almost anything to your computer. It can slow down your system, delete your files, and make your computer act weird. It can even destroy your computer! Be afraid… Be very afraid…

How do I prevent it?

Make sure your computer has antivirus software installed (ask parents). Never open files or accept file transfers from places or people that you don’t trust.

Would you open a file from…

  • Your Mother?
  • Best Friend?
  • Candystand.com, Postopia.com (trusted game websites)?
  • An email with an unknown sender?
  • An untrusted game website?
  • A chatroom?
